The twelve-day training camp in Calpe is over for the riders of Roompot – Charles Cycling Team. Endurance training sessions, interval training sessions and, not unimportantly, rest periods were alternated under the watchful eye of our sport directors and medical staff. And what about all the new riders: did they get along? Absolutely, so say Lars Boom, Pieter Weening, Mathias De Witte and Jean-Paul van Poppel in the video below.
“After our first team meeting in Zeeland, the team came together for the first time in Spain”, says sports director Jean-Paul van Poppel. “We also had a lot of partners visiting the past week. It’s been very successful. In Zeeland we had already seen that the riders were getting along well. The atmosphere is fantastic, both among the riders and the staff. It’s nice to see that they have growing sympathy for eachother. We are all very eager to start the season.”
Van Poppel is happy with the work his riders have done in Calpe: “Trainer and team doctor Guido Vroemen worked together with Michael Boogerd to develop a program for this training camp. They looked at what was ideal for the riders, who were allowed enough space and time to do their own thing within the team training sessions, such as the interval training sessions on the Coll de Rates. Everyone was able to do their own blocks. At times it was really tough, I mean you have to go deep occasionally. Then afterwards you see a big smile on their faces because they did well.”
