Nick van der Lijke had a good first day in the Challenge Mallorca. He finished 16th in the Trofeo Ses Salines – Felanitx (1.1), the first of four one day races on the Spanish island. “I had that good feeling again today after my illness during our training camp,” he says.
“It was a relatively quiet ride today, but there was a lot of wind which made it a bit nervous in the peloton”, Van der Lijke told us after the first Trofeo on Mallorca. “This stage was relatively flat until the final climb, which was five kilometers uphill. Halfway on that climb there was a dead moment, so I decided to try and attack, but I quickly realized I wasn’t going nowhere. But I did have a good feeling on the bike today.”
Also sports director Michael Boogerd is satisfied with the first race day of the new road season: “There was a big crash just before the final climb, we got through well and together we started the climb in a group of about 30 riders. Only Lars wasn’t there anymore because shortly before he was still in the attack. For us it was difficult today to get a good result because of the uphill finish, so I gave the riders a different assignment. They did well; they were well positioned at the front of the bunch at the foot of the climb.
Nick van der Lijke tried to launch an attack in the final kilometers and finished around the fifteenth position. Tomorrow it will be a difficult ride. Hopefully we can do something with Nick or Pieter in the final.”
Justin Timmermans after first game at the pros: “Great weather and race with the big men”
For Justin Timmermans, the Trofeo Ses Salines – Felanitx was his first race as a professional rider. He looks back on it with satisfaction: “It was a nervous race with a strong wind. I tried to join the breakaway a few times, but I didn’t succeed. After that it went very fast until the final climb. After some crashes in the last 20 km, there was about 40 riders left in the peloton. Together with Boy, I managed to get the guys in a good position before the climb, after which I quietly rode to the finish line. They said I did well, so I’m happy about that.”
“I enjoyed myself today, of course! Great weather and racing with the big boys… On to tomorrow. I’ll do my best again!”
