The first stage of the Tour of Oman was decided in a bunch sprint as expected. Good result for Boy van Poppel: he finished in 7th place, Stijn Steels in 16th position.
The riders had to cover 138,5 flat kilometers Saturday in the first stage of the Tour of Oman 2019. The race was predictable, with a four-man breakaway that was caught some six kms before the finish line. Alexander Kristoff subsequently was the fastest in the bunch sprint, Boy van Poppel was happy with his 7th place.
“It went well. Stijn Steels and Jesper Asselman helped me a lot. Stijn was with me until the last kilometer. The guys did a great job today! The pace was really high in the last kilometer. Maybe I could have passed a couple riders more, but I’m satisfied. Still, if you feel good, you always want more. So I’m looking forward to the next sprint and hopefully we can achieve a good result again!”
On Sunday, the second of the six stages will be held. This time the riders will have to cover 156,5 hilly kilometers with four categorized climbs. “It’ll be a tricky final”, predicts van Poppel. “But I think we have riders who can pull it off, for example Maurits Lammertink.”
