Good result for Roompot – Chales Cycling Team in the Clásica de Almería (1.HC) with two riders in the top 10! In a race well represented by sprinters Lars Boom and Sjoerd van Ginneken sprinted to eighth and ninth place. Justin Timmermans was, again, part of the day’s breakaway.
The Clásica de Almería usually ends in a mass sprint in the streets of Roquetas de Mar. However, a considerable selection was already made this year in the hill zone half-way. At that point, Justin Timmermans already had a lot of kilometers in the breakaway, just like Saturday in the Vuelta a Murcia. He managed to cling to the first group taking over the break, which also included Lars Boom and Sjoerd van Ginneken.
“After that early selection, the pace never dropped,” explains sport director Erik Breukink. “Lars and Sjoerd were up there and also Justin. He has helped the guys well. Because the pace was kept high at the front we opted for the sprint. There were some fast guys, yes, but there weren’t really other options. Two of our guys in the top ten is a good result. Good for morale!”
First year pro cyclist Justin Timmermans looks back on the race with satisfaction. “I am very happy. I wanted to be in the breakaway again and I succeeded. On top of the last climb a first part of the peloton joined us. Mitchelton-Scott pulled everything apart in the descent. I was in the front with Lars and Sjoerd. I’m glad that I was able to help them well in the final. It was a good conclusion of my three days here in Spain. I’m also very pleased that I could show I belong here.”
And also Sjoerd van Ginneken is happy with his three Spanish race days: “I concluded these days in Spain with a ninth place”, he said after the Clásica. “I’m going back with a very good feeling. Now on to the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Le Samyn!”
Because of the early selection in the race, only 46 riders reached the finish line in Roquetas de Mar. Here are the results of our riders:
- 8. Lars Boom
- 9. Sjoerd van Ginneken
- 19. Justin Timmermans
- DNF Senne Leysen
- DNF Michael Van Staeyen
- DNF Oscar Riesebeek
- DNF Mathias De Witte
23rd place for Duyn in second stage Tour of Oman
Also in Oman the action continued. In the second stage, Alexey Lutsenko managed to stay just out of reach of a chasing group with thirty riders. Huub Duyn was part of that bunch and finished in 23rd place. In the coming days some tougher stages are awaiting the riders.
