As expected, the second stage in the Ruta del Sol was decided in a mass sprint. Michael Van Staeyen sprinted to ninth place and also kept his leader’s jersey in the classification of the ‘meta volantes’. On Friday a short, but tough individual time trial of 16 km awaits our riders.
The longest stage in the Ruta del Sol was predictable and somewhat monotonous. Six riders escaped from the bunch shortly after the start in Seville and built up an advantage up to 7’30” over the pack. At 23 km from the finish line in Torredonjimeno they were caught. At that moment, the breakaway had already passed two ‘meta volantes’, after which two riders collected as many points as Michael Van Staeyen in the sprint classification.
Because Van Staeyen next finished in ninth place, far better than the other two, the guy from Antwerp kept his jersey. This is what he had to say after the stage: “Thanks to the great work of my teammates, I finished in ninth place today and I keep the sprint jersey. I missed some power in the last km because of yesterday’s attack, which caused me to choke a bit in the final meters.”
Tomorrow the riders face an individual time trial of 16 km. The first part is uphill, the second downhill, the last stretch is ascending again. Promising! Here are the ramp times of our riders:
- 14.13: Van Staeyen
- 14.16: De Bie
- 14.42: Reinders
- 14.50: van der Lijke
- 14.55: Boom
- 15.18: De Witte
- 15.19: Riesebeek
