Lars Boom finished in eighth place in the final stage of the Ruta del Sol. He did so in a group sprint on a slightly uphill stretch. He looks back on a successful stay in Spain: “It has been a long time since I felt this way.”
After a first attempt by Nick van der Lijke, Oscar Riesebeek went on the attack on the final day of the Ruta del Sol. On the tough course – only the last 30 kilometers were flat – he found himself in good company, with Tolhoek, Marczyński and mountain king S. Yates. On the last climb of the day, however, they were caught by the peloton.
Mathias De Witte then took the three points on the last Meta Volante of the week. That meant Michael Van Staeyen was the overall winner of the intermediate sprint classification! Michael wasn’t part of the peloton anymore due to mechanical problems and so Lars Boom could take his chances in the sprint. He finished in an excellent eighth place. A successful final day of this Spanish stage race! Boom looks back on the Ruta with a good feeling and is ready for the classics. Watch his reaction in the video below (with English subtitles).
