Good result for Mathias De Witte and Maurits Lammertink in the fifth stage of Volta a Catalunya. They both finished in the top 15. In the E3 BinckBank Classic, Stijn Steels was part of the breakaway and rode up front until the Paterberg.
After two tough mountain stages, the fifth stage in Catalonia was a bit flatter (apart from the first half of the race). Maximilian Schachmann, who was part of the early escape group, managed to hold off the chasing bunch in Sant Cugat. Seconds later, Mathias De Witte – on his birthday – and Maurits Lammertink sprinted to 13th and 14th place in the peloton.
Mathias: “After the past few days I felt better again. I spent a lot of energy chasing when I had a mechanical issue at 40km of the finish line. The last kms were chaotic. We were a bit too far to get a better result in the sprint. I hope I can get other good results in the remaining stages.”
Steels: “Goosebumps because of the massive support”
Stijn Steels was part of the breakaway in the spring classic E3 BinckBank Classic, traditionally with start and finish in Harelbeke. He was caught by the first chasers on the Paterberg. “The form is good”, he said after the race. “This is the toughest one of the spring classics. I felt good in the breakaway. The goal was to ride up front as long as possible. It was fun. The massive support along the roads gave me goosebumps.”
Next on our race program is Gent – Wevelgem, on Sunday, March 31. Next week we’ll ride the Volta Limburg Classic (on Saturday, April 6) and the Tour of Flanders (on Sunday, April 7).
