Jesper Asselman gave Roompot – Charles Cycling Team its first stage win of the season. And what a victory it was! He was the first to cross the finish line in the opening stage of the Tour de Yorkshire. Asselman was the only escapee who managed to stay ahead of the chasing bunch in the sprint. He’s also the first leader in the GC.
Six riders opted for the breakaway shortly after the start in Doncaster, among them also Jesper Asselman. They never got a comfortable lead over the bunch, the maximum gap was 2’40”. Only four riders remained in the end and started sprinting for the win in the streets of Selby. However, the riders in the pack had closed the gap rapidly and were just behind them. Asselman was the only escapee who managed to stay ahead of the bunch and took a beautiful stage win! A great victory for the 29-year-old after a soaking wet stage with great crowds witnessing the Tour de Yorkshire.
Boy van Poppel finished the stage in fourth place, only just behind Asselman. Jan-Willem van Schip, who started racing again after a short break, finished in 15th place. Asselman leads the GC after day one and is also the leader in the points classification. Roompot – Charles tops the the team’s classification. Maurits Lammertink made the team’s intentions clear this morning: “We aim for a stage win”, he said. Check! Watch Asselman’s comments after his amazing stage victory below.
