Boy van Poppel got another great result for Roompot – Charles Cycling Team in the second stage of the Tour de Yorkshire. He finished second in a bunch sprint, behind stage winner Rick Zabel (Katusha). He takes over the points jersey from teammate Jesper Asselman, who still leads the GC.
The second stage in the Tour de Yorkshire was a short one, 132 kms between Barnsley and Bedale. No Roompot-Charles-riders in the breakaway this time, as they stayed in the b unch to assist blue jersey Jesper Asselman and Boy van Poppel in preparation of the mass sprint. In the last hour of racing, Jan-Willem van Schip and Senne Leysen were sent to the front of the pack to close the gap with the escapees. This time the peloton didn’t mistime the catch.
After his fourth place in the opening stage, van Poppel got another great result in the sprint as he came even closer to a stage win. The green points jersey is a nice bonus. Asselman remains in the lead of the general classification, one second ahead of Zabel, five ahead of van Poppel. “I’m happy that we managed to hold on to the leader’s jersey,” he said. “It’s also fantastic that Boy was so close to the win and that he’s now in the green jersey. Tomorrow will be tough but if I have good legs I think I can get a good result.”
Boy van Poppel too is satisfied with his second place and green jersey, but is still waiting for his first win in the colours of Roompot – Charles. “I hope I can repay the guys soon with a win for all their hard work”, he says. Watch his comments after the second stage below.
