The Tour de Yorkshire is behind us. It’s been a very succesful race for Roompot – Charles Cycling Team! After the fourth and final stage in the North of England, Nick van der Lijke finished tenth in the general classification.
The final stage in Yorkshire was also the toughest one: 175 kms with five cataloged (and a lot of unofficial) climbs. Nick van der Lijke stated before the stage that it would be important to be well up front on the climbs to ensure both a good stage and overall result. And that’s exactly what happened. Van der Lijke was always well positioned in the bunch, that was considerably thinned out as the stage progressed and eventually completely shattered in the final kilometres of the stage.
“I’m happy. Before the race, I would have thought tenth overall is an excellent result. But because I crossed the finish line at 3 seconds of a small group in front of me, I think it’s a shame that I just couldn’t close that gap. Even though those were really strong riders, 6th or 7th overall would have been rally nice. It’s a matter of seconds. It can work in your advantage or disadvantage. Luckily I managed to finish in the top ten. Huub and Maurits did a great job for me in the final. That was great of them. In fact, all riders have focused on me today. That’s just really cool of them.”
It’s been anything but an anonymous Tour de Yorkshire for Roompot – Charles. In addition to Nick van der Lijke’s overall ranking, there was the stage win of Jesper Asselman, who also wore the leader’s jersey a couple of days, and the green jersey of Asselman and Boy van Poppel. “This really is a boost for the team”, says van der Lijke. “Now we must make sure we give this past week a good follow-up.”
