While the Tour of Norway had started with bad news for Roompot – Charles Cycling Team, the six-day stage race did end on a positive note: Elmar Reinders claimed the polka dot jersey as the best climber of the race!
Already on the opening day, two Roompot-Charles riders had to abandon the race: Maurits Lammertink had fallen ill and realized shortly after the start that there was no point in continuing. Nick van der Lijke was involved in a crash and dislocated his left shoulder. It also meant the end of his race.
Luckily, Elmar Reinders made up for the bad news. He went on the attack in the opening stage and again the day after! On the third day he was granted some rest by sports director Erik Breukink. But in the three remaining stages there was no stopping him again. Which means he was in the breakaway during five of the six stages.
After the fifth day, he took over the polka dot jersey a first time. “I just wanted to try and be in the breakaway again and se where we’d end up”, he said after the stage. “On the sixth and last day he was the first rider to reach the top of the first climb. By doing so, he had accumulated enough points in the mountains classification to definitively claim the polka dot jersey. Great stuff!
