What a week for our riders in the Tour de Luxembourg: Maurits Lammertink finished second overall and Roompot – Charles Cycling Team was the strongest team in the five-day race!
After Pieter Weening ‘s win on day three, also the following stages were very succesful for Roompot – Charles Cycling Team. Maurits Lammertink came second in the queen stage on Saturday and finished fifth on Sunday, two places ahead of Huub Duyn, after his teammates did some excellent preparatory work for their leader. Lammertink is happy with his podium spot in the GC.
“I’m happy to be on the podium again”, he said. “The legs weren’t that good today though, I had to dig a bit too deep yesterday (Saturday, ed.) I think. Today was full gas on the final ascent of the Pabeierbierg. Mathias and Pieter did great to get me to the front at the foot of the climb. I attacked, but some riders passed me by. You have the legs or not. Herrada and Cofidis were the strongest today. We’ve done everything we could.”
With a stage win for Weening, a sixth place for Sjoerd van Ginneken in stage one and top ten finishes for Lammertink and Duyn, Roompot – Charles has had an excellent week in Luxemburg. “You can see that we are a very strong collective in these types of races”, according to Lammertink. “Pieter’s win has been a boost. We’re in a good flow. We also had that in Yorkshire a few weeks ago. We’re holding on to the momentum. I hope there are more nice races coming up.”
Lammertink’s next assignment is the ZLM Tour. “The terrain won’t be that tough. I’ll have to see how I can contribute to the team. I wasn’t in bad shape in the spring, the legs were good in Yorkshire too. Nick was really strong there, so you ride for him. After that I had some rest and went on to train really hard. I was ready to perform in Norway, but unfortunately I got ill. I had a good feeling again in the prologue. I was confident for the race. And it turned out well, finally.”
Lammertink came second overall, Weening 11th, Duyn 13th. Roompot – Charles was the best team. You can find a full overview of the GC and stage results on this page.
