Roompot – Charles Cycling Team is on a roll! DS Nick Nuyens said so before the start of the Baloise Belgium Tour. And Jan-Willem van Schip proved him right today by winning the first stage after an incredible solo! “It’s surreal! This is what you do it for”, he says.
Jan-Willem van Schip wanted to be in the breakaway today whatever the cost, so he attacked immediately after the start. It meant he spent the entire day in the breakaway… and in the rain. In the Golden Kilometer, at 14 kms of the finish line, he won 7 bonus seconds. Shortly after, he left his last fellow escapees behind.
His advantage over the bunch was not more than 30 seconds, but it turned out to be enough. When he crossed the line in Knokke-Heist, he had a handful of seconds left over the pack. A surprise solo victory after an impressive attack! “It was going well. I was in a flow state and I thought ‘now I go as fast as I can’. It was fast enough, because they never saw me again. It’s surreal. I’m so happy! This is what you do it for.”
Thanks to his stage victory – the third for Roompot – Charles this year- van Schip also gets the points jersey and of course the leader’s jersey. In the GC, he’s got 15 seconds advantage on the second rider in the rankings.
You want Jan-Willem's reaction? Well, here it is! 😉
