Our very own Elmar Reinders will be seen in action at the European Championships in Alkmaar this Sunday, August 11. For the elite men road race, he’ll swap the orange of Roompot – Charles for that of Team Holland. “It’s nice to be part of it!”
Elmar looks forward to the Euros: “This afternoon I’ll report to the selection in Bergen near Alkmaar and we’ll go for a training ride together. I know all the other selected riders, at least from racing together. Do they know me too? I don’t know, I think they know who I am. Over the last few weeks I put myself in the spotlight with some good races and results. I don’t think they’ll select someone from Roompot otherwise. I didn’t count on it, but it’s nice to be part of the Euros. Especially since it’s in the Netherlands.”
At the Dutch national Championships, Elmar launched a fiery solo attack in the race finale. Is that something he’d like to repeat at the European Championships? “I’d love to give it a try, but I think it’ll be difficult with the team we have at the Euros. With Dylan Groenewegen in our ranks, we’ll probably won’t have to send Elmar in the breakaway. But it’s fun to be here. I will have a serving role and it can be anything: doing turns at the front of the bunch or joining a five-man break.”
“I think it will be a tough race. Everyone predicts a mass sprint, but I’m not so sure of that with all those local laps around the city of Alkmaar. There’ll be lots of turning and accelerating. Normally, that’s something that should suit me very well.” (laughs) Good luck, Elmar!
