Nick van der Lijke marked his comeback with an excellent third place in the Veenendaal – Veenendaal Classic! It was his first race in three months. “I wanted to attack again and enjoy cycling.”
After three months of recovering from his shoulder injury, Nick van der Lijke was eager to start racing again. In the Dutch one-day race Veenendaal – Veenendaal, he primarily wanted to regain race rhythm and be in the breakaway. He soon met his expectations, ending up in a front group of fourteen riders, including teammate Oscar Riesebeek. In the final kilometers, van der Lijke escaped from the break with two companions.
In a short sprint with three he was no match for his two fellow escapees, but his comeback had already been a big success! “I just wanted to attack again and enjoy cycling”, he reacts. “I managed to do that pretty well. First in the breakaway with fourteen and then later with three. Of course you always want more, but I’m really happy with this result. I couldn’t have hoped for more.”
Veenendaal – Veenendaal became a true team success. Riesebeek finished fourth nine seconds behind the race winner and with Jesper Asselman a third Roompot-Charles rider made it into the top ten!
