Bad luck for Michael Van Staeyen: the Antwerp rider broke his little finger on Monday at the Erpe kermesse. “I was part of a breakaway group of nine riders,” he explains. “I slipped in a turn and came in the shadow. There, I hit a small pole when I started accelerating again. This Thursday I will undergo surgery after which I will know more about how long I will be unable to race.”
Van Staeyen was riding really well in the past weeks. The 31-year-old sprinter recently won two kermesses, finished third in the Schaal Sels Merksem and fourth in the Omloop Mandel-Leie-Schelde last weekend.
