Arjen Livyns has won Desselgem Koerse, his first race as a professional cyclist. He was the fastest of a reduced leading group and finished just ahead of the sprinting peloton. “I enjoyed the support along the course so close to home,” he said afterwards.
Desselgem Koerse, also known as the Memorial Briek Schotte, is a kermesse with traditionally some big names at the start. This was also the case last Tuesday. Arjen Livyns, who knows the region very well, was one of the first to attack. Others then joined the escapees, forming a large leading group of 29 riders.
Six riders then escaped from the front group in the last hour of racing. Three of them managed to stay ahead of the chasing peloton, but only just. Livyns convincingly sprinted to victory, his first one as a professional rider. “Even if this is just a kermesse, you have to start somewhere”, he declared after the racee. “I enjoyed the support along the course so close to home.”
Huub Duyn won the peloton sprint and finished fourth. Stijn Steels and Senne Leysen were also present in Desselgem. Click on the link to watch an extensive video report of the race.
